Heather Peters
My Honda Civic 2006 still gets 51 mpg under ideal conditions, even with the battery modification that Heather mentions. In summer driving fast, 65-70 this still comes out around 47 mpg.
Ideal conditions, however, requires summertime temperatures, flat highway unobstructed or with a steady flow of traffic at 49-51 mph, no headwind, sea-level and tires inflated to 35lb. Sudden acceleration and passing take a tole.
The following circumstances degrade mileage considerably: rain, snow, ice, cold weather, hills, stop go traffic, headwind or gravel. As a result I average 36 town: winter, big hill, snow, ice, and rain. Highway same conditions yields 40-42 at 55 to 65 mph. Most people fail to realize the effect temperature, altitude and road conditions have on engine power and thus fuel utilization.
I am still tickled pink to have the hybrid with regenerative braking in a car that has superior handling and good power. I still think my model is the best package and it will get the mileage if I don't push it too hard.
One other caveat is the oil specification of synthetic 0-20 wt. Heavier oil will also reduce mileage in winter.
