Black Bear

Well I didn't think the old dog had it in him. He treed a bear last night about 10 o'clock. The bear spent the night in the tree then got down this morning about 5am. I could see the bear in the tree from bed out the closet window. It was clear to me too that the bear could see me. Brutus was not going to give up his front porch. I must say the Brew had the dry heaves when I got him inside. Must have been a lot of adrenalin floating around. The big German Sheppard must look like a wolf to a bear's hard wired instincts, never mind that the dog has bad hips.

So here is the Brut at the base of the tree barking like he had a squirrel up the big spruce tree. And from the tree comes the sound of a baritone pussy cat---a big one. I thought at first it must be a porcupine and called Brutus inside. He did not want to come, more hissing from the tree. I could not see what it was, so when I got Brutus, finely, to come in, I looked out the bathroom windows, could not see a critter. Then I looked out my closet window and there is this big black bear, approximately 150#, looking me in the face not twenty feet away. He kept eying me until I turned the lights out. When I got up this morning he was still there. When I looked again he was gone. I wish I had stayed and watched. From the bear scat, there may have been a mother bear down below. If it was a cub it was a big one. Brown bear makes the same sound before he charges; I should have recognized the hiss.
