Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

A Tax on Talk

This really makes me angry! IRS to tax VoIP, voice over Internet.

First, I would bet the incumbent telephone cartels are behind it. Second, The tax on speech, communications and information is the most regressive tax of all, like taxing the air we breath. These are some of the most vital issues of our time. Information, all kinds, must be free.

Economic growth depends on the ability to exploit a cheap abundant resource. The Information economy depends on rapid technological growth based on that resource, i.e. information. Far more revenue accrues to the Treasury Department from the product of technology than could ever be realized by taxing the substrate. "Don't choke the goose that lays the golden egg."
