The Draft
Never mind weather this war was a wise decision. It is not a war that can be won by conventional military means. It is a war for Diplomacy, Public Relations, the CIA, the KGB, M6 and our best Delta forces. This is a war for the professional using unconventional tactics. We need to take them out where ever they emerge from the shadows, become the hunter and not the hunted. This is not the cowboys and the Indians. We did not do all that well with that one either. We call ourselves a superpower. (Sic) If we still are or ever were, it will all go away with the draft. If we do this thing, they will have won.
Should we not ask ourselves what the sociological results of a draft would be on our youth? Ask any of us who have been. We will tell you. No more plans for community, for family or for marriage. Little regard for education or the prospects of a better world, just “Eat drink and be marry for who knows tomorrow we may be ourselves with yesterdays seven thousand years.” Omar Khayyam
Senate bill 89 and HR 163 would draft boys and girls alike ages 18 through 26. It would become effective June 15, 2005. How long has this one been flying along under the radar? A peacetime draft for community and humanitarian missions would be great, but how can we support a draft for certain combat not favored by the draftees when we exempt the politicians. This is not an issue of patriotism but of strategy --- just stupid.
The war on terror is serious business. In a sense, it is a civil war among the Muslims. Drawing us into it benefits the side of the terrorists. We need to be more cleaver. If we play Checkers, and the Russians play Chess, then the Arabs play Parcheesi. Lets get smart, not beat our chest.
