National Weather Service
a. The preparation and issuance of hydrometeorological guidance and core forecast information. b. The collection and exchange of meteorological, hydrological, climatic, and oceanographic data and information to the public for free unless the Secretary determines that the private sector is unwilling or unable to provide such product or service.
I can just see myself contacting some pricy airline weather service in Pennsylvania for an analysis of the weather over the Cook Inlet at 6am with passengers waiting for word. The FAA FSS is challenged enough in getting the weather interpretation from NWS. And where, pray tell, will the private weather contractor get his or her information?
Maybe the best way to disprove global warming is to discontinue the NWS. Reminds me of a favorite helicopter pilot who says, "Why bother with the weather when you are going to go anyway." A veteran of three wars, "he would be dead now if he weren't so good a stick."
