Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

Zero Emissions Electric Vehicles Now

What happened to the promise of electric cars, EVs? With the greater efficiency relative simplicity and regenerative breaking, is there an engineer out there who does not think the EV will out preform the internal combustion engine with in a decade. It's not just the environment, now it's the money. With the price of oil and gas, the EV is even more economical. In London, with some greater experience with electric, the average driver gets a range of over 100 miles at a cost for full recharge of 2.87 pounds worth of electricity. Do the math.

When California relaxed the 2003 deadline for ZEV, zero emissions vehicle, the automakers leasing electrics took the ZEVs off the market in favor of hybrids. Some EVs are even being crushed. Is this not engineered scarcity? Why would you pay $3 plus a gallon to charge your battery when home garage electricity costs significantly less? Read the laments of former electric Lessees. The only way to beat the energy cartel is with consumer demand! Let's bypass hybrids in favor of pure plug-in electric or at least a hybrid with pure battery running capacity and plug-in option. The pure EV does not require a filling station at all.

The EV may need a South-Wind Heater in Alaska, but cold starts won't be a problem. There are places in the interior where super-conductors might even improve efficiency. I jest, but maybe not. Galena is installing a pebble reactor because heating oil costs $5 a gallon --- cheap electricity.

What I want in my garage is an electric with 4wd and regenerative breaking. If I were a racing buff, I might consider entering an EV in the Indy 500. I bet they would outlaw it.
