Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

Locks and the Bump-Key

If you think your door lock is a secure protection, look at this video of the bump-key. (Warning it is a slow down-load, but worth the wait.)

There is nothing like a German Shepard! Ours chases full grown black bear up a tree. In Alaska the neighbor puts in a mercury light for security and then leaves the door unlocked. I haven't taken the keys out of my car in years, unless we go to the big city, Anchorage, but with the dog in the car, no problem. Every car has a dog! Most everyone leaves home with a house-sitter in place. Someone needs to feed the dogs and there are plenty of single people looking for shelter in winter. The big dog-house alone, in a prominent location, makes a statement. One might add a big chain, anchored to the ground, with the last link broken. --- Then there is the door sticker, "This house is protected by Smith & Wesson."
