Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

Chiang Mai

A group of enthusiastic young Rotarians built a number of small flood control dams along the upper mountainous streams feeding into the Chaem River that floods the northern city of Chiang Mai in Thailand. I did not get a chance to discuss the mosquito issue with these recent visitors. One wonders about the possible consequence of creating slack water in the dense jungle, pictured on their visit. Conceivably the altitude mitigates the mosquito presence and these jungle ponds as a breeding ground, but if not there may be an unintended consequence.
