Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

Outsourcing Science

http://www.robertreich.org/reich/20060816.asp

Since the beginning of time grandfathers have claimed the younger generation was going to hell. This time we may be right. The self indulgent undisciplined youth of today blow away our scientific future in a cloud of cannabis smoke. "Yea dude, you know." There are no short term consequences to self emancipation. Parents cannot inforce discipline. Higher education seems largely remedial. Where is the leadership? For that matter, where is the infrastructure of funding for university research? When we privatized the infrastructure, we free industry to choose the lowest bidder and that's not us!
