Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

Travon Martin

It's time for a Trayvon Martin Hoodie with a built-in ballistic vest and a second look at Florida's stand your ground law. Concealed carry too may have gone to far. The permit should not be given to idiots or those without extensive training and a compelling need. If the permit extends to other states, then an idiot from another state with less supervision may be walking down your street.

Was Trayvon shot in the back? I hope for a fair trial, but I would anticipate that the medical examiner will answer my question. Even the most extreme advocate of "stand your ground" will condemn a shot in the back.

Here in Alaska, we all have guns and for compelling reasons, but I like to see them carried out in the open. A rifle was mandatory in my aircraft, and a large caliber pistol is wise while fishing. I support the second amendment but not the extreme positions on either side. Like every thing else in politics, common sense lives only in the middle ground.
