Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

MDocrats

MDocrats, now run US health care from their rich offices and their multimillion dollar salaries. MDs that seek power and wealth by exploiting patient care form a now well established class. Bureaucratic medicine offers the entrepreneur a soft target. In my day we called it prostituting your profession.

Totalitarianism seems in vogué, nowhere more so than in our healthcare system, and nowhere are the deleterious effects mor evident than in US medicine. The ranking of healthcare outcomes among developed nations places the US 34th, second to last. The measured outcomes include not just longevity but nearly every metric of a patient care starting with périnatal death rate.

Highly paid government MDocrats support a class of hospital CEOs backed by the American Hospital Association and AHA’s sponsored graduate education program for hospital administrators directed to maximizing administrative income, and corporate medicine.  Even the non profit hospital now prioritizes profit, expensive procedures and diminishing the authority of clinical doctors, still trying to put patient care first. In fact the hospital monopoly already succeeded in their goal of subordinating doctors to hospital employment and protocols dictated by a medical bureaucracy largely driven, even funded, by big pharmaceutical interests. With corporate medicine, the self regulation of profit and consensus replaced the medical profession’s dedication to patient care and diagnosis with corporate profit and productivity.

The government medical bureaucracy, Health and Human Services, HHS, largely supports modern business technology as a solution to a widespread inequality and high cost of health care, mostly of their own creation. The only visible solution would be to re discover Hippocratic medicine, putting clinical physicians back in charge of patient care. Explore the European formula for insurance, private and public medicine, not the English bureaucratic model and outlaw corporate medicine
