Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

Tepee

Ah, the 4th of July, the grand children are coming. Boys 15 and 14 ready to pull logs and do other Boy Scoutly things, me thinks we will build a tepee.

A surplus parachute has been gathering dust in the basement for decades, and the logs will make a comfortable interior. A survival exercise, when well done the tepee makes comfortable camp living. Much more comfortable than a tent, the fire warms the interior. The beds consisting of two small logs with pine bows make comfortable sleeping and a comfortable seat for cooking and just talking by the fire. The smoke from the fire escapes out the top and renders the thin cloth waterproof even in heavy rain.

“Let’s buy fire crackers and blow something up together,” says our youngest.
