Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Lycoming's New Green Engine iE2

Lycoming introduced its full authority Integrated Electronic Engine with mechanical backup. First shown at EAA in Oshkosh it is a completely new engine. The iE2, TEO-540-A1A, 540 cu in., 350 HP features a computer logic controlling: fuel, turbocharger, and propeller. The engine should be certified by year end. The computer controls the engine on an individual cylinder basis. The engine is much lighter and much more fuel efficient. Twin turbo chargers add to both efficiency and power. The computer conducts preflight safety checks, knock detection, improved starting and single-lever engine control. Ian Walsh, Lycoming V.P. says that regular interval preventive maintenance on the iE2 eliminates the need for overhaul. Lycoming also claims that the iE2 can be configured to run reliably and even self-adapt to burn alternate fuels.
