Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Public Health Gap between US and EU

The Global Burden of Disease study[1] (GBD) illustrates the embarrassing gap between life expectancy and disability deficiency in the US compared to European countries and Japan. The ranking for each common disease by nation places us near the bottom.

Until we can further mitigate the social risk factors and cultural causes of this dichotomy, we might limit our enthusiasm for exporting our style of democracy. Our laissez-faire untempered freedom may impose a burden of ill health compared to a more disciplined freedom in other nations.[2]

Much of the problem is nutritional, but some is dysfunctional families, deleterious behaviors and a sick healthcare system based on greed. The marginalization of the medical profession in favor of big business, carpetbaggers, and politicians does not help.
