Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

Index Medicus

Scientific searches seem difficult even on Google. Sirrus helps but the indexing and search for hard data remains hit or miss. Nowhere will the paid for rankings yield more confusion than here in serious scientific searches. Medline seems clunky and the best effort on a medical search comes down to the same Index Medicus used as first search directory back in the 50s. Indeed, Index Medicus appears on the National Medical Library website with reasonably familiar search parameters. One must go elsewhere however to call up the article. Just like the old days, take the reference to the librarian and ask for the journal. I read that Google was attempting to catalog the libraries for scientific information. A one-hour search, reduced to 10 minutes suggests a 500% gain in productivity. How does protecting copyright, which would not be protected by the library, anyway, help productivity?
