Astronaut Charged
A marathon drive, cross-country in a diaper, sounds more like a confused space cadet than a premeditated plan to murder. This is a woman with 3 kids, a stressful marital relation, work stress certainly and maybe a love triangle, but that may be more hallucination than jealousy, perhaps stress related as well. One look at her picture screams the diagnosis of missed or ignored psychosis. Remember the mother who murdered her children in a Post Partum Psychosis? Her husband kept calling for treatment. Yes, this woman is dangerous, but she needs treatment, not incarceration or prosecution. District attorneys as a rule use exquisite judgment in their decisions about people’s lives, but sometimes they just don’t know, have a bad day or, worse still, political dreams and a will to build their fame on a controversial headline case.
NASA responds in a politically correct fashion, but might better respond by taking greater responsibility. They should commit their legal team to her assistance, at least until a psych analysis. The accumulated stress of space flight might just be the proximate cause. Not just, “Oh my that may be so,” or “My, but she does look a wreck does she not?” NASA will see this again and should have better understanding of the cause, the break point and the mitigation on long flights. I would bet my bottom biffy this woman is in a work stress related psychotic break aggravated by family pressure and what ever. The reaction can be delayed. I would like to know her radiation expositor numbers, while in space, her hours of duty time and, precisely, the family stressors. She and her husband will need months if not years of marriage counseling; it should preferably start out now in a hospital or treatment center setting. I would bet Nowak’s husband is confused but supportive even now. I hope her lawyer gets her what she needs, and NASA should be going full press for diagnosis and treatment. Oh yes, and is there drug or alcohol involvement, or is she pregnant?
Wake up Houston! You've got one chick still out there.
I can’t get over that picture.
