Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

Fusion Google Nuclear? Clean, cheap, nuclear power (no, really)

Hot fusion, safely contained, deserves a closer look. Apparently the DOE will not support because the technology runs counter to DOE's funded, international and gargantuan fusion project. DARPA and the Navy were involved. The project is now up for grabs. (More to come) This one (concept) clearly deserves more research. Check Robert W. Bussard (PHD Princeton) and a company, E=MC2. This live video was Bussard's presentation in the Google auditorium, Nov 9th 2006. From a reality check viewpoint, E=MC2 apparently demonstrated, briefly, a magnetically contained small scale hot fusion reaction in the laboratory with a high net energy yield. This fascinating presentation runs 90 minutes and should be viewed by anyone contemplating Energy policy or CO2 emissions.

Bussard says, the physics is well developed, the engineering needs work. If I understand him correctly, the engineers with this kind of expertise are in their 70s as was Bussard.
