Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

UK Fiber Optice to every Home

BBC NEWS Technology 'Tough choices' for UK broadband

We are not even talking about it.
If the capital expenditure is too high for government, how about letting the home owner buy a bit of the investment. Each owner might install the fiber from their home to the street and to one or two neighbor's houses, thus installing a mesh along with the optic modem. Finance 100% of the investment as an add-on to the home mortgage.
The added value to the house would exceed the amount of the investment.
In this small fishing village in Alaska, we are limited to 750 k symmetrical both up and down. Rural distribution will be a problem. If Google gets their hands on abandoned TV spectrum the wireless option may still be viable. --- That is, if we can bring the FCC out of the stone age.
