Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

WalMart

Wal-Mart announced last month that their 4$ a month prescription plan will be extended to 1,264 stores located in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Texas and Vermont.

What a refreshing piece of news. If anybody smaller than Wal-mart tried this, they would need fear for their life. Maybe only Wal-Mart has the market power to face down the pharmacology cartel, certainly the government does not. On the supply side too, Wal-Mart has the supply chain and the buying power to buy the generics in overseas markets and deliver. This does “Do no evil” one better. The Public relations bonanza will last them a lifetime.

Too often big business finds it easier to create scarcity and raise prices than to offer the public what it needs at a fair price. Pharmamegaly is not alone. Mediamegaly managed to buy your polititian legislators in exchange for extending the copyright laws for, what is it, 100 years. When our distant offspring in an anthropological dig, find a reel of Snow White in fossilized remains, they will probably find a perfectly preserved FBI warning against using, copying, or showing this fossil without advanced payment to the heirs of Walt Disney.

Well, power to Wal-Mart for proving what we knew all along, we’ve been screwed, while our numb nuts Representatives suck up the campaign contributions and block Canadian filled prescriptions at the border. If you don’t know what these prescriptions for chronic diseases have been costing, you will be shocked to learn. When some of these greedy bean counters of prevailing monopolies and cartels get wind of the PR benefits Wal-Mart, and Target is following along, reap from this social entrepreneurial gesture, they might chance an egalitarian gesture of their own. Hay guys, it’s only numbers, but you better follow the numbers, or you miss earnings estimates and maybe your job.
