Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

Global Warming Questions

Sooner or later, airlines, NASA and the FAA are going to have to realize that the airspace is no longer able to sustain increasing jet travel on fossil fuels. Already a major contributor to atmospheric CO2, further growth is sure to attract regulation. Boeing’s 787 significantly reduces green house producing emissions, but the mammoth Airbus moves in the other direction. Bio-diesel must be pre-heated. Can we replace the soggy pretzels on United with French fries?

Will super conductors and electric power drive the giant turbo fans? Will sub-orbital flight reduce resistance and allow for cleaner semi-ballistic flights? Can Maglev trains compete with air travel? Can terminals and systems grow to meet demand?
