Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

Daddy Warbucks

Oliver Warbucks became the benefactor and friend of Annie in the comic strip of the 20s through 50s by Harold Gray. An idealised capitalist, believing in hard work and free markets, Warbucks appeared and disappeared from the pages, even spending time in jail. The political cartoon serves as an apt metaphor for the present day tension between unregulated free markets and privatization versus the need for regulation and a more egalitarian public infrastructure.
