Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

Artemis Project: Lunar Helium-3 as an Energy Source,
in a nutshell

Artemis Project: Lunar Helium-3 as an Energy Source,
in a nutshell

Artemis was the sister to Apollo in Greek mythology. Artemis is the Moon while Apollo is the Sun. In strategising a solution to rising green house gases, one might consider the card players expression, "Shoot the Moon." In other words, go for the whole stack of cards while others are trying to empty their hand.

Fusion is definitely on the table as a cleaner more powerful energy source, but the problem of containment seems a long way off. Helium-3 as a fuel, however, may be more manageable. It is used in nano-tech laboratory experiments with deuterium to demonstrate fusion on a minute scale triggered by a highly focused electric charge from what amounts to a radio crystal. The trouble with He-3 as a fuel however is, there just isn't enough of it. Ah, but mineral samples from the moon indicate an abundance --- read on!
