Hughesair (Inflection Point)

Retired physician and air taxi operator, science writer and part time assistant professor, these editorials cover a wide range of topics. Mostly non political, mostly true, I write more from a lifetime of experience and from research, more science than convention. Subjects cover medicine, Alaska aviation, economics, technology and an occasional book review. Globalization or Democracy documents the historical roots of Oligarchy, the road to colonialism and tyranny

Chrysler

BACKGROUND: Cerberus expands auto portfolio with Chrysler

In other times there would be flag waving with the return of Chrysler ownership to the US. Not that Daimler did not add to the robustness of Chrysler engineering, it did. Look at the Pacifica. But now, what an opportunity Chrysler has to lead the green revolution and why not?

The electric motor has lain dormant for the better part of a century, much like the lead acid battery and the Bendix brake. This sleeping giant has the mid term potential to dramatically improve: performance, handling, braking, comfort, cost and the environment. In a way the electric seems part of the Information Revolution. Chrysler has the engineering to do it and the tradition of reaching beyond for technology.

If I were involved, which I am not, I would push for research on a tiny ceramic turbine generator that would run on anything. Couple the tiny turbine with hollow wound motors coupled to all 4 wheels and we have dramatic improvement in traction, handling and braking. Place the new technology solar cells on the roof for supplemental power and plug-in for low cost regeneration at night and race the thing! Ten years on the race track and the technology will be unrecognisable. Oh well, Chrysler has seen wishful thinking before, but Cerberus does have the money to make things happen.
